Steve Coleman Teams With Hungarian Musicians for European Tour

Wednesday 7th December 2005 - 7:24:21 AM

I went to hear Steve Coleman at Trafo last Wednesday (Nov. 30th). With the warm up act it was almost four hours long! For this European tour, Steve has invited four Hungarian musicians to join him on stage: Zoltan Lantos (violin), Mihaly Borbely (reeds), Miklos Lucacs (cimbolom) and Gabor Winand (vocals).

We waited about two hours to hear Gabor’s voice blend with the instruments, and it sounded great! Perhaps the best I’ve ever heard him sing.

Steve used the musicians in an interesting manner; they played intermittently, punctuating and emphasizing, and I was always surprised at how effectively - yet sparingly - they were used.

I wrote a lot of poetry: 8 pages in my notebook. Unlike anything else I’ve ever written, as usual. I will get a pdf file up in a few days.

Meanwhile, the poems are as follows:

1) There’s a door over there…
2) Wanna go for a walk down my street?
3) Play the alphabet
4) I’ll pull you up
