I’ve just switched the site over to Permalinks to start the process of maximising my presence in search engines. I’ve scratched my head over using these since I started this website and every time I started to read the ‘instructions’ at the Word Press Codex site I’d get blurry eyed and my third eye would ache, and I would say: “Not yet…” I think the fact that WordPress lists it under ‘advanced’ use may have predisposed me to thinking it was confusing because tonight I clicked through the various links and found myself on Tom Raftery’s site reading a thread on search engine optimisation using permalinks and it suddenly all clicked.

So, now you will see words in the URL rather than a lot of numbers. The category in the Permalinks isn’t working right yet - so you may see a lot of ‘uncategorised’.

Also, I have put a lot of links in the site, linking to pther parts of the site, and all those links haven’t been changed. I tried a couple and the appropriate page opened, but the URL was the old style number instead of the name, so if you run into any problems with links not working, please send a note to alisonbo at this site.
