Frank Zappa Memorial
I first heard these guys last spring downstairs at the Pesti Est Cafe.
When I heard them at Pesti Est, they were just plain too loud and I couldn’t really appreciate them. When I heard them last night, I was impressed with what a tight, polished sound they have developed in the past 9 months. They’re tight.
For last night’s show at the a38 they were joined by Jimmy Carl Black. Jimmy - an original member of Mother’s of Invention - was born in 1938. He’s 67 years old and still kicking ass. I admire that.
That proves it. Anything is possible.
P.S.The evening started with a 1972 < ?> Saturday Night Live Christmas special with Frank Zappa. It was hilarious. Man, John Belushi was in his prime. This excerpt from a Belushi tribute website:
March 5, 1982. It was just another night for John, he was in his Chateau Bungalow #3 with some friends working on a movie script. Tonight John decided he wanted something to take him further than he had ever been. John shot up a speed ball. The mixing of heroin and cocaine that night had a cumulative effect on the brain, slowing down John’s breathing and finally causing complete respiratory failure.
Lest we forget what killed the best before we learned how to do it without drugs.
