Piano Burnout Sets In
I am already suffering from piano burnout at this festival that is focussing on the piano. And it’s only Day 2. And I love the piano! But after an evening of ivory keys, it sure was nice to stumble into Paris Texas coffee house for a late evening taste of Gyárfás István’s guitar accompanied by Szalóky Béla’s various horns - especially his trumpet, along with Csáko Péter on bass guitar and Cseh Balázs on drums.
Okay, earlier in the evening I was thoroughly entranced by John Patitucci’s double bass, with Jack DeJohnette on drums and a line of up of who’s who in Hungarian jazz piano: the Szakcsi Generation Project - three Szakcsi’s - senior and junior Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, as well as Robert. But it was Oláh Kálmán’s playing that fully captured me.
